Sound, Sustainability, and Self with Sophia Sanford

Cannabis as a Source of Creative Clarity

In the dimly lit corners of her studio, where the hum of synthesizers meets the flicker of ambient light, Sophia Sanford finds her creative sanctuary. For Sophia, cannabis is more than a daily ritual; it is a cornerstone of her artistic process and a vital component of her personal equilibrium. As a musician, producer, and label owner, Sophia navigates the complexities of the music industry with resilience and innovative thinking, seamlessly blending her commitment to artistry with her passion for sustainability.

Cannabis: The Creative Catalyst

Sophia’s relationship with cannabis is both intimate and integral to her creative process. “I love weed. I use it every day,” she says candidly, underscoring its importance in her life. Cannabis serves as more than an indulgence; it provides clarity and helps manage the stresses of her multifaceted career. “It’s like a little meditation that gives me a bit of clarity,” Sophia explains. This daily practice aids her transition between administrative tasks and creative work, offering a space for both introspection and inspiration.

Rather than a mere escape, Sophia views cannabis as a crucial element of her stability. It plays a significant role in moments of artistic inspiration, helping her approach her work with a fresh perspective.

The Genesis of Sophia’s Sound

Sophia’s journey into music began in her childhood, shaped by a rich tapestry of influences. Her exposure to diverse sounds laid the groundwork for her distinctive sonic palette. From her local music scene beginnings to experiences in Montreal, London, and Vancouver, her career has been marked by exploration and growth. “I love being an artist,” she reflects, “but I am not born for touring. I will have a mental breakdown and then embarrass myself somehow.”

Her time in London was particularly formative. The city’s intense and competitive atmosphere, while initially enticing, proved overwhelming. “I moved to fucking London to be in hot pursuit of a music career, and I was like, I’m gonna die. It’s so intense and competitive in this way,” she recalls. This realization led her to reassess her priorities, adopting a more sustainable approach to her career.

Despite the challenges, Sophia’s passion for music remains unwavering. Her work, characterized by an obsession with the voice and sound, results in eerie yet beautiful soundscapes that explore deeply personal themes.

Noise Machine: Innovating for the Future

Central to Sophia’s vision is Noise Machine, a unique creative space and label that supports artists through every stage of their music and sound projects. Located in a 70s cabin overlooking the Salish Sea in British Columbia, Noise Machine offers a retreat that blends artistic production with an immersive natural experience. “I wanted to create a space where artists could not only work but also deeply immerse themselves in nature,” Sophia explains. The tranquil setting provides an ideal backdrop for creativity and reflection.

Noise Machine caters to the diverse needs of sound and music industry professionals, offering a refuge where artists can find rest and inspiration. Sophia’s vision includes creating unconventional revenue streams, such as licensing music for commercials, to provide alternatives to traditional touring. “We’ll get you put in a German car ad, great. You don’t have to go on tour if you don’t want to,” she muses.

Soft Serve Shop: Sustainable Fashion and Community Impact

In addition to her work with Noise Machine, Sophia is deeply involved in Soft Serve Shop, an online vintage store that embodies her dedication to sustainability and community. This venture reflects her commitment to merging fashion with environmental responsibility.

Soft Serve Shop focuses on developing recycled merchandise options for artists, addressing a critical gap in the industry. With a mission to offer sustainable fashion solutions, the store reduces waste while providing unique, eco-friendly options. Sophia, alongside a team of neurodivergent femmes, leads this initiative with a vision to expand rural textile recycling and promote circular fashion practices. “Our goal is to develop recycled merchandise options for artists,” Sophia explains.

Evolving Artistic Vision and Community Engagement

Sophia’s commitment extends to community engagement, particularly in mentoring femme youth in music technology. Her focus on education and empowerment is a central aspect of her work, reflecting her belief in nurturing the next generation of artists. “Education in music tech for femme youth in my community is a priority both personally and professionally,” she notes.

Looking to the future, Sophia aims to further integrate her passions with actionable change. By leveraging her experiences and platforms, she supports emerging artists, especially those from underserved communities. Her efforts are shaping a new era in the music industry, where creativity, environmental responsibility, and community connection are at the forefront.

Sophia Sanford’s innovative approaches to music production, sustainability, and community engagement highlight her commitment to creating meaningful change. As she continues to evolve as an artist and advocate, she is setting the stage for a future where creativity and responsibility go hand in hand.
